Preliminary Notes and Checkout For Intermittent Diagnosis
NOTES1. This procedure begins with a complaint that the engine stops at unexpected times but can be restarted. In situations like this there are two things that are very important.
a. The technician must obtain as much information directly from the customer about the conditions under which the problem occurs.
b. The service history of the vehicle must be thoroughly reviewed to avoid repeat replacement of good components. For example, replacing a good stator assembly a second time will not correct a problem.
2. Three testers are available for assistance with intermittent diagnosis.
a. The Rotunda Thick Film Ignition (TFI)/EEC-IV Intermittent Ignition Analyzer 007-00035 is available for diagnosing intermittent problems and provides a quick connection to the Distributor Ignition (DI) ignition system and records intermittent failures. The DI intermittent analyzer can not be used with Ignition Control Modules (ICM) with Computer Controlled Dwell (CCD) unless a CCD update is added to the analyzer or a TFI Intermittent Analyzer that has a CCD compatible label on the tester is used.
b. The Rotunda Ignition System Tester 007-00008 provides a quick means of separating primary ignition system problems from fuel, EGR, or other system problems causing similar symptoms. It can be used on most ignition systems. It will detect any primary ignition system problem, but it is particularly useful in detection of intermittent problems.
c. The Rotunda Distributor/less Ignition System Tester (DIST) 007-00075 is available for diagnosing intermittent problems on all TFI/EEC-IV systems. It will detect any primary ignition system problem, but it is particularly useful in detection of intermittent problems. Diagnostic procedures for the DIST can be found at Ignition System Intermittent Diagnostic Procedures.
CHECKOUT
1. Visually inspect the engine compartment to ensure all vacuum hoses and spark plug wires are properly routed and securely connected.
2. Examine all wiring harnesses and connectors for insulation damage, burned, overheated, loose, or broken conditions.
