Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor detects the position (R,OD, D, L) of the shift control selector lever and supplies this information as an input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Note: For this application the MLP sensor does not indicate if the transmission is in park or neutral. A separate Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch is used to supply this information.
CONSTRUCTION
The MLP is a 4 position switch attached to the shift linkage on the upper part of the transmission case.
Testing Schematic:
OPERATION
The MLP receives a 12.0 volt signal from the ignition switch. The MLP has 4 separate output terminals, each one corresponding to a gear position. As the transmission is shifted the MLP applies the 12.0 volt signal to the corresponding output connection.
RELATED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
DTC 67/634 - The MLP sensor was out of self-test range with the transmission in park.
DTC 522/654 - The gear selector was not in park during the self-test.
