Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
1. Relieve fuel system pressure.2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
Fig. 2 Removing & Installing Cylinder Head:
3. Drain cooling system, then remove timing belt upper and middle covers.
4. Rotate crankshaft and align timing marks located on camshaft pulleys and seal plate.
5. Loosen timing belt tensioner lock bolt and temporarily secure tensioner spring in the fully extended position.
6. Remove timing belt from camshaft pulleys and position so that it is not damaged during the removal and installation of the cylinder head.
NOTE: Do not allow timing belt to be contaminated by oil or grease.
7. Disconnect vacuum hoses from cylinder head cover, then spark plug wires from spark plugs.
8. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket, then the air duct from resonance chamber to throttle body.
9. Disconnect accelerator and kickdown cables from throttle cam, then remove accelerator and kickdown cable bracket from intake plenum.
10. Disconnect all vacuum lines from intake plenum, then all necessary electrical connectors from cylinder head, exhaust manifold, intake plenum and throttle body.
11. Disconnect ground straps, then remove upper radiator hose.
12. Remove transaxle to engine block upper righthand bolt.
13. Disconnect fuel pressure and return lines and plug lines.
14. Disconnect ignition coil high tension lead from distributor, then all necessary hoses from cylinder head and intake plenum.
15. Remove two bolts from transaxle vent tube routing brackets, then raise and support vehicle.
16. Remove bolt from water pump to cylinder head hose bracket.
17. Remove exhaust mounting flange and exhaust pipe support bracket from exhaust manifold.
18. Remove intake plenum support bracket, then lower vehicle.
