Removal and Installation
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then turn ignition switch to On position.
2. Remove access panel from dash below steering column.
3. Remove four screws from dash panel steering column boot, then slide boot along intermediate shaft.
4. Remove intermediate shaft bolts at gear input shaft and from steering column shaft.
5. Using wide blade screwdriver, spread slot wide enough to loosen intermediate shaft at both ends.
6. Turn steering wheel to full left stop to facilitate gear removal.
7. Remove pressure switch.
8. Disconnect secondary air tube at check valve, then the exhaust pipes from exhaust manifold. Secure exhaust system to the side.
9. Remove exhaust hanger brackets from below steering gear and from side apron.
10. Disconnect pressure and return lines from intermediate connector and drain fluid.
11. Remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles using tie rod end remover tool No. 3290D and adapter tool No. T81P-3504-W, or equivalents. Turn right wheel to full left turn position.
12. On models equipped with manual transmission, remove left tie rod end from tie rod.
13. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect speedometer and shift cables from transmission.
14. On all models, remove gear mounting brackets and insulators.
15. Remove gear from intermediate shaft by pushing upward on shaft with bar while pulling gear downward.
16. Rotate gear downward and forward to clear input shaft.
17. Ensure input shaft is in full left turn position, then move gear through right side apron opening until left tie rod clears opening. Use caution to avoid damaging bellows.
18. Lower left side of gear and remove gear from vehicle.
19. Reverse procedure to install.
