Seat Belt: Description and Operation

Lap Safety Belts-Active Restraints
The front and rear seat outboard lap safety belt is continuous with the shoulder safety belt. Outboard safety belts are anchored at the outboard side to the vehicle body sill on front and to the floorpan for rear seat. A separate lap safety belt anchored to floorpan, is provided for center rear seating.

Lap/Shoulder Safety Belt-Active Restraints
The front seat safety belt extends from a retractor near the floor, in the quarter panel on 2-door vehicles and the B-pillar on 4-door vehicles. It then passes through a D-ring mounted to the upper part of either the quarter panel (2-door vehicles) or the the B-pillar post (4-door vehicles). From the D-ring the belt extends down and inward, and then through the tongue outboard to the sill below the door opening. The part of the safety belt extending down and inward from the D-ring to the tongue acts as a shoulder safety belt. The part of the safety belt extending outward from the tongue to the sill below the door acts as a lap safety belt. The safety belt retractor is designed to let the safety belt move in or out freely. The retractor locks during hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of 8 km/h (5 mph) or higher.

The rear seat shoulder belt extends from a retractor mounted underneath the package tray trim panel. The belt is angled downward at the proper angle over the occupant's shoulder and chest to the lap belt buckle. The belt then continues through the tongue to the floor anchorage below the seat cushion on the outboard side and acts as a lap belt.
