C: Check VAPS Actuator And Circuit

CHECK VAPS ACTUATOR AND CIRCUIT

C1
Actuator (Electrical) Check
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect VAPS harness connector from power steering variable assist control and bracket.

- Connect DVOM to Circuits 495 and 496.
- Measure resistance.
- Connect DVOM to Circuits 497 and 498.
- Measure resistance.
Is resistance between 43 and 70 ohms?
Yes
Go to C2.
No
Go to C5.

C2 Harness Voltage At Actuator Connector
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Verify that VAPS connector is connected to power steering variable assist control and bracket.
- Disconnect actuator connector from VAPS harness connector.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
- Wait five seconds.

- Measure DC voltage between Circuit 495 and ground. Then measure voltage between Circuit 496 and ground.
- One of these two circuits should be greater than 10 volts and the other less than 2 volts.
- Repeat the two steps above for Circuit 497 and 498.
Do voltage readings check OK?
Yes
Go to C3.
No
REPLACE VAPS module. Service and Repair
Go to A4. A4 - A11

C3 Actuator (Mechanical) Check
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Remove actuator.
- Reconnect actuator connector to VAPS harness connector.

- Attach DVOM as shown to data link connector (near brake booster). Use Engine Compartment Views to help locate connector. Component Locations
- Turn ignition switch to RUN.
- The power steering variable assist control and bracket will go through a diagnostic check, consisting initially of the 90 second efforts change sequence.

- If the actuator is mechanically operable, the actuator valve will move between its two limits of travel (Approximately 3mm). This movement can be detected by watching the valve spring expand and relax between the travel limits.
Does spring move?
Yes
REPLACE steering gear assembly. Service and Repair
Go to A4. A4 - A11
No
REPLACE actuator. Service and Repair
Go to A4. A4 - A11

C4 Actuator (Electrical) Check
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect actuator connector from harness connector.

- Connect DVOM to Circuits 495 and 496.
- Measure resistance.
- Connect DVOM to Circuits 497 and 498 on actuator.
- Measure resistance.
Is resistance between 43 and 70 ohms?
Yes
Go to C6.
No
REPLACE actuator. Service and Repair
Go to A4. A4 - A11

C5 Actuator (electrical) Check
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in C5.
- Measure resistance.
Is resistance less than 43 or greater than 70 ohms?
Yes
REPLACE actuator. Service and Repair
Go to A2. A1- A3
No
Go to C6.

C6 Continuity Check
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.
- Disconnect module connector from power steering variable assist control and bracket.
- Disconnect actuator connector from actuator.
- Check continuity of Circuit 495 from module connector to actuator connector.
- Repeat for Circuits 496, 497 and 498.
Do all circuits check OK?
Yes
Go to C4.
No
SERVICE harness.
Go to A4. A4 - A11
