A4 - A11

Note:
- Pinpoint Tests A4 - A11 are checking for steering effort change (A4,A6,A8,A10) and then confirming if there is no change in effort (A5,A7,A9,A11).
- These tests use the needle sweep of an analog voltmeter to aid in diagnosis; either 2 sweeps (A4,A5), 4 sweeps (A6,A7), 6 sweeps (A8,A9) or zero sweeps (A10,A11).

A4 Module Check (EFFORT CHANGE 2 Sweeps)
- Turn ignition switch to OFF.






- Connect an analog voltmeter positive lead (R) to Circuit 606 and negative lead (BK) to vehicle ground.
- Use jumper wire and ground Circuit 200.
- Start engine.
- Rotate steering wheel (3600) for approximately 90 seconds noting any changes in steering effort.
The effort required to turn the steering wheel should vary between light and heavy in both directions.
- After approximately 90 seconds, voltmeter will show a sweep pattern between battery voltage and zero.
After a five second pause, the sweep pattern will be repeated.
- Remove Circuit 200 ground before proceeding to next test.
Is there steering effort change with 2 sweeps?
Yes
VAPS Module OK.
Go to B1. B: Check Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) And Circuit
No
Go to A5.

A5 Module Check (NO EFFORT CHANGE 2 Sweeps)
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in A4.
- Rotate steering wheel and watch sweep pattern as in A4.
Is there no effort change with 2 sweeps?
Yes
Go to C1. C: Check VAPS Actuator And Circuit
No
Go to A6.

A6 Module Check (EFFORT CHANGE 4 Sweeps)
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in A4.
- Rotate steering wheel and watch sweep pattern as in A4.
Is there effort change with 4 sweeps?
Yes
Go to D2. D: VAPS Module Harness Check
No
Go to A7.

A7 Module Check (NO EFFORT CHANGE 4 Sweeps)
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in A4.
- Rotate steering wheel and watch sweep pattern as in A4.
Is there no effort change with 4 sweeps?
Yes
Go to C1. C: Check VAPS Actuator And Circuit
No
Go to A8.

A8 Module Check (EFFORT CHANGE 6 Sweeps)
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in A4.
- Rotate steering wheel and watch sweep pattern as in A4.
Is there effort change with 6 sweeps?
Yes
Go to D4. D: VAPS Module Harness Check
No
Go to A9.

A9 Module Check (NO EFFORT CHANGE 6 Sweeps)
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in A4.
- Rotate steering wheel and watch sweep pattern as in A4.
Is there no effort change with 6 sweeps?
Yes
Go to C1. C: Check VAPS Actuator And Circuit
No
Go to A10.

A10 Module Check (EFFORT CHANGE Zero Sweeps)
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in A4.
- Rotate steering wheel and watch sweep pattern as in A4.
Is there effort change with zero sweeps?
Yes
Go to D4. D: VAPS Module Harness Check
No
Go to A11.

A11 Module Check (NO EFFORT CHANGE Zero Sweeps)
- Repeat vehicle set-up as in A4.
- Rotate steering wheel and watch sweep pattern as in A4.
