Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

NOTE: Before replacing hydraulic valve lifters for noisy operation, ensure the noise is not caused by improper rocker arm to stem clearance, worn rocker arms, pushrods or valve tips.

1. Disconnect spark plug wires from spark plugs and position aside.
2. Remove intake manifold.
3. Remove rocker arm cover attaching bolts and the covers.
4. Loosen rocker arm fulcrum attaching bolts enough so rocker arm can be lifted of pushrod and rotated aside.
5. Remove pushrods, then the lifters. Keep lifters and pushrods in order, so they can be installed in their original position.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate lifters, pushrods and rocker arms with suitable lubricant.
b. Torque rocker arm fulcrum bolts to 44 in lb, then to 19-25 ft lb. Ensure pushrods and rocker arms are fully seated prior to torquing bolts.
