Shift Point Road Tests
Road Test Vehicle
1. Shift Point Road Test
This test verifies that the shift control system is operating properly.
Perform the test as follows:
a. Bring engine and transaxle up to normal operating temperature.
b. Operate vehicle with transaxle selector in overdrive range.
c. Apply minimum throttle and observe speeds at which upshift occurs and torque converter engages.
Refer to the AX4N Shift Speeds Chart.
d. Stop vehicle and move shift control selector lever to D range.
Repeat Step C Transaxle will make all upshifts except 3-4 and torque converter clutch apply should occur above 46km/h (27 mph).
e. Press accelerator pedal to floor, wide-open throttle (WOT) Transaxle should shift from third to second, or third to first, depending on vehicle speed, and torque converter clutch should release
f. With vehicle speed above 48 km/h (30 mph), move shift control selector lever from D range to 1 range (LOW) and remove foot from accelerator pedal. Transaxle should immediately downshift to second gear. When vehicle speed drops below 32km/h (20 mph), transaxle should downshift into first gear.
g. If transaxle fails to upshift/downshift or torque converter clutch does not apply and release, refer to Diagnosis by Symptom Charts for possible causes.
2. Torque Converter Clutch Operation Test This test verifies that the torque converter clutch control system and the torque converter are operating properly.
Perform the test as follows:
a. Connect tachometer to engine.
b. Bring engine to normal operating temperature by driving vehicle at highway speeds for approximately 15 minutes in overdrive range.
c. After normal operating temperature are reached, maintain constant vehicle speed of about 80 km/h (50 mph) and tap brake pedal with the left foot.
d. Engine rpm should increase when brake pedal is tapped and decrease about five seconds after pedal is released. If this does not occur, refer to Torque Converter Operation Concerns in Diagnosis by Symptom Charts.
3. Visually inspect the vehicle for the following items.
a. Vehicle modification.
b. Electronic add-on items.
- Air conditioning
- Generators (alternators)
- Engine turbos
- Cellular telephones
- Cruise controls
- CB radios
- Linear boosters
- Backup alarm signals
- Computers
c. Leaks.
d. Proper linkage adjustments.
e. These items, if not installed properly, will affect powertrain control module or transmission function. Pay particular attention to add-on wiring splices in the powertrain control module harness or transmission wiring harness, abnormal tire size, or axle ratio changes.
f. After a road test, with the vehicle warm and before disturbing any connectors, perform the Quick Test using Super Star II Tester 007-0041-B or New Generation Star Tester 007-00500 or equivalent.
4. Check technical service bulletins for concern information.
5. Perform complete on-board diagnostic procedures (KOEO, KOER).
