Backup Lamp Switch: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION
The Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor is a series of step down resistors that act as a voltage divider.

PURPOSE
The MLP Sensor allows the driver to start the vehicle in "PARK" or "NEUTRAL" position only.

The powertrain control module monitors the voltage from the MLP sensor. This information is used in determining the desired shifting points and the transmission electronic pressure control pressure.

The backup lamp circuits are also contained within this sensor. With the transmission in "REVERSE", the MLP switch allows current flow to illuminate the backup lamps and signals the day/night mirror to remain in, or switch to, the "DAY" mode.
