Removal and Installation
REMOVAL1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect positive battery cable and wait one minute for the air bag diagnostic monitor to deplete the air bag backup power supply.
2. Loosen main wiring connector bolt in engine compartment at LH side of dash panel and separate connectors.
3. Remove radio antenna stanchion and disconnect the radio antenna lead in cable from the lead base of the radio antenna stanchion.
4. Remove both RH and LH windshield side garnish mouldings.
5. Remove screws retaining both RH and LH front door scuff plates. Lift front door scuff plates and remove front door opening weatherstrips from body flanges.
NOTE: Do not remove safety belt retaining bolts in steps.
6. Remove the RH and LH cowl side trim panels.
7. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover by removing three screws along the bottom and pull on cover to unsnap the three clips across the top of the instrument panel steering column cover.
8. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.
9. Remove the four screws retaining the steering column shrouds together and remove the steering column shrouds.
10. Install the ignition switch lock cylinder to prevent the steering wheel from turning.
11. Disconnect the wiring connectors at the turn signal and windshield wiper switch.
12. Remove one screw and A/C evaporator register duct from under the steering column tube.
13. Disconnect the wiring connectors at the bottom of the steering column tube.
14. Remove the pinch bolt attaching the steering column tube to steering column lower yoke and slightly spread the joint with a screwdriver.
15. While supporting the steering column tube, remove the four steering column tube retaining nuts.
16. Remove the interlock cable retaining screws and shift actuator cable fitting.
17. Carefully remove the steering column tube from the vehicle.
18. Loosen main wiring connector bolt at LH side of steering column opening and separate connectors.
19. Disconnect stoplight switch wiring connector and on manual transmission disconnect the clutch pedal position switch wiring connector.

20. Pull back the floor carpet as required on the LH and RH sides of the vehicle and disconnect the window regulator safety relay switch wiring and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) from the main wiring.
21. Open glove compartment to the stop, unsnap the hydraulic lift from the right side of the glove compartment.
22. Remove the three screws at the bottom retaining the glove compartment door hinge and glove compartment to the instrument panel.
23. Remove glove compartment from the instrument panel.
A/C Heater Assembly, Without Automatic Temperature Control:

24. Reach through the glove compartment opening and disconnect the wiring and vacuum hoses/connector from the heater-A/C evaporator housing.
25. Disconnect the wiring connector from the speed control amplifier and bracket assembly.
26. Remove floor console panel.
27. Using a putty knife or similar tool, insert under the LH or RH corner of the instrument panel upper finish panel and pry up on the instrument panel upper finish panel to release one snap clip.
NOTE: Protect the instrument panel surface during this procedure.
28. Unsnap the remaining four clips pulling up by hand, working toward the opposite side of the vehicle.
29. Remove two nuts retaining LH side of instrument panel to cowl side.
30. Remove two nuts and one bolt retaining the instrument panel to the instrument panel console bracket.
31. Remove the nut attaching the RH side of the instrument panel to cowl side.
NOTE: The following steps require two technicians.
32. Remove the six bolts retaining the top of the instrument panel to the dash panel.
33. Carefully pull instrument panel away from windshield glass while checking for and disconnecting any remaining wiring connectors. Disengage the antenna wire grommet from the sheet metal and pull the radio antenna lead in cable through.
34. If instrument panel is being replaced, transfer all components, wiring and retaining hardware to new instrument panel, if necessary.
35. To install, reverse Removal procedure. After installing instrument panel, check all components to ensure proper operation.
