Ignition Control Module: Service and Repair
REMOVALDistributor Assembly:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect vacuum hose from vacuum control unit. Note location of each hose for proper installation.
3. Unplug electrical connectors.
4. Disconnect coil wire from distributor cap.
5. Remove retaining screws from distributor cap; position out of the way.
6. Scribe distributor housing and cylinder head so that distributor may be installed in original position. Note rotor position.
7. Remove distributor hold-down bolts and distributor.
NOTE: Do not crank engine after distributor has been removed.
8. Remove pick-up unit and radio noise suppressor.
9. Note location of connectors and disconnect connectors from module.
10. Remove module retaining screws.
Distributor Disassembly:
11. Pull armature and pin from upper shaft using 2 jaw puller.
12. Remove module assembly.
INSTALLATION
1. Apply a thin, even film of silicone dielectric compound to igniter module mounting face.
2. Position module and install retaining screws.
3. Plug in wiring connectors.
Armature Installation:
4. Using a socket and the palm of your hand, press armature and pin onto upper shaft until it bottoms against shoulder of upper shaft.
5. Connect module leads in positions noted during disassembly.
6. Install radio noise suppressor and pick-up unit.
7. Install dust cover.
8. Set rotor to position noted during removal. Lubricate O-ring seal with engine oil.
NOTE: If crankshaft is turned while distributor is removed, rotor position noted during removal can no longer be used to correctly time distributor to camshaft. Distributor drive tang is off-set to allow only one installation position. Insert distributor and rotate rotor until drive tang falls into slot of camshaft.
9. Install distributor on rear of cylinder head and align scribe marks.
10. Install distributor hold-down bolts.
11. Install distributor cap and tighten retaining screws.
12. Connect coil wire to distributor cap.
13. Plug in electrical connectors.
14. Connect vacuum hoses.
15. Connect negative battery cable.
16. Start engine, check and adjust ignition timing as necessary.
