System Description
Ignition System Components:
The Electronic Distributorless Ignition System (EI), consists of a Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP), an Ignition Control Module (ICM), an EEC IV processor and one Ignition Coil Pack. This system operates by sending crankshaft position information from the CKP and desired spark advance information from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to the Ignition Control Module (ICM) module. The Ignition Control Module uses this information to direct which coil to fire and to calculate correct dwell and spark advance. The ICM also generates a Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) signal and an Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) signal for use by the EEC engine control strategy. The Ignition Control Module sends information on system failures through through the IDM signal to the PCM and the PCM stores the information for diagnostic self tests.
