Headlamp: Description and Operation

OPERATION
Voltage is present at the coil and contacts of the Headlamp Relay at all times through the HEAD Fuse Link Cartridge.

Headlamps
With the Main Light Switch in the "HEAD" position, the Headlamp Relay coil is grounded and its contacts close. Depending on the Main Light Switch Dimmer Switch position, current flows through the HEAD Fuse Link Cartridge, the Headlamp Relay contacts, the Dimmer Switch contacts, and either the Hi or Lo Beam Headlamps to ground. The Headlamps illuminate.

With the Dimmer Switch in the "Hi Beam" position, current also flows through the Instrument Cluster Hi Beam Indicator to ground, and the Indicator illuminates.

Moving the Main Light Switch to the "PARK" or "OFF" position turns off the Headlamps.

Flash To Pass Feature
The Main Light Switch contains a Flash to Pass Switch that allows the driver to flash the Hi Beam Headlamps rapidly without using the regular headlamp portion of the Main Light Switch.

When the Headlamps are turned OFF and the Dimmer Switch lever is pulled partway toward the driver, two sets of Flash to Pass Switch contacts close. As the Headlamp Relay is energized through one set of contacts, current is directed to the Hi Beam Headlamps through another set of contacts. The Hi Beam Headlamps illuminate until the lever is released.
