W/4 Pinion Differential

REMOVAL

Typical 4 Pinion Differential Assembly:






1. Remove righthand differential bearing cup from case and install over righthand differential bearing.

CAUTION: Failure to use cup will result in damage to differential bearing.

2. Remove differential bearing from speedometer side of differential using differential side bearing remover tool No. T66P-4220-A and step plate tool No. T81P-4220-A, or equivalents.
3. Remove speedometer drive gear.

NOTE: Speedometer drive gear is plastic and is not pressed onto differential case.

4. If necessary, remove lefthand differential bearing using differential bearing cone remover tool No. T57L-4220-A and step plate tool No. T81P-4220-A, or equivalents.
5. Drive out three pinion shaft retaining pins using 5/32 inch drift.
6. Remove final drive ring gear rivets using 3/8 inch drill bit.

CAUTION: Drill only preformed side of rivet to prevent distorting case.

7. Drive out rivet shanks with punch, then use press to remove final drive ring gear from differential case.
8. Separate differential by lightly tapping lefthand side away from righthand side using hammer and drift, then remove left side gear and thrust washer from case.
9. Using drift and hammer, gently tap long pinion shaft through rear axle pinion shaft seat and pinion gear, then remove shaft from case.
10. Remove four pinion gears, thrust washer, rear axle pinion shaft seat, and righthand side gear and thrust washer.

INSTALLATION
1. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Lubricate thrust washers and thrust surfaces on gears and differential case with transaxle fluid.
b. Use only final drive ring gear bolts and nuts supplied for service.
c. Note direction of final drive ring gear bolts.
d. Install speedometer drive gear so tangs are position on upper side of gear. differential
e. Install bearings using differential bearing cone installer tool No. T83P-4220-CH, or equivalent.
