Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair

NOTE: Before replacing a hydraulic valve lifter for noisy operation, ensure the noise is not caused by improper collapsed tappet gap, worn rocker arms, pushrods or valve tips.

1. To check collapsed tappet gap, proceed as follows:

Fig. 9 Checking Collpses Tappet Gap:

a. Rotate camshaft to position A as shown.
b. Check intake and exhaust valves on compression stroke under camshaft position A. With camshaft in position A, tappet gap should be .072-.174 inch with tappet collapsed on base circle of camshaft. Check No. 1 cylinder intake and exhaust valves. Check No. 2 cylinder intake valve. Check No. 3 cylinder exhaust valve. Tighten fulcrum bolts to 20-26 ft lb.
c. Rotate camshaft 180° to position B as shown. Check No. 2 cylinder exhaust valve. Check No. 3 cylinder intake valve. Check No. 4 cylinder intake and exhaust valve. Tighten fulcrum bolts to 20-26 ft lb.
2. Remove lifters as follows:
a. Remove cylinder head as described previously.
b. Using a suitable magnet, remove lifters from lifter bores.
c. Place valve lifters in a rack so they can be installed in their original positions.

NOTE: If the lifters are stuck in their bores by excessive varnish or gum buildup, use hydraulic lifter puller D81-6500-A, or equivalent, to remove valve lifters.

3. Reverse procedure to install.
