Camshaft: Service and Repair

NOTE: The following procedure can only be performed with the engine removed from the vehicle.

1. Remove engine from vehicle.
2. Remove dipstick.
3. Remove accessory drive belts and pulleys.
4. Position No. 1 piston at TDC with distributor rotor at No. 1 firing position, then remove distributor.
5. Remove cylinder head from engine.
6. Using a suitable magnet, remove hydraulic tappets and position in order so that they can be installed in their original locations. If tappets are stuck in their bores, use hydraulic lifter remover D81L-6500A, or equivalent, to remove tappets.
7. Loosen then remove drive belt and crankshaft pulley.
8. Remove front cover from engine.
9. Remove timing chain, sprockets and timing chain tensioner.
10. Remove camshaft thrust plate. Carefully remove camshaft from engine to avoid damaging camshaft bearings, journals and lobes.
11. Reverse procedure to install. Lubricate camshaft with suitable oil before installing. Ensure No. 1 piston is at TDC with distributor rotor at No. 1 firing position.
