With Digital Instrument Cluster

DESCRIPTION
The Digital Instrument Cluster with System Scanner and Fuel Computer is a single electronic module. The Cluster includes a row of conventional Warning Indicator lamps.

Coolant Temperature Gauge
As coolant temperature changes, resistance of the Coolant Temperature Sender changes. The twelve segment bar graph Coolant Temperature Gauge responds to the change in resistance by increasing or decreasing the number of segments that light up. A shorted sender will cause the top two and bottom two bars to light up, and the legend and ISO indicator will be off.

Fuel Level Gauge
As the amount of fuel in the fuel tank decreases, resistance of the Fuel Gauge Sender decreases. Resistance will be approximately 170 ohms with a full tank and 10 ohms with an empty tank. The twelve segment bar graph Fuel Level Gauge responds to the change in resistance by increasing or decreasing the number of segments that light up. A shorted or open Sender will cause the top two and bottom two bars to light up, and the legend and ISO indicator will be off.

Digital Speedometer
The Speedometer displays vehicle speeds from 0 to 85 mph or 0 to 199 Km/h. Vehicle speed is displayed whether the car is moving forward or backward. To select mph or Km/h, press the E/M button located on the Switch Module.

Electronic Odometer
The Odometer displays accumulated mileage in miles or kilometers from "000000.0." to "999999.9." When "999999.9" is exceeded, the display rolls over to "000000.0." Mileage is stored in a non-volatile memory that retains accumulated mileage if the battery is disconnected.

Tachometer
The Tachometer is an electronic unit that displays engine speed in crankshaft revolutions per minute (RPM) from 0 RPM to 7000 RPM. The Tachometer can be turned off by pressing the TACH button on the Switch Module.

Fuel Computer
The Fuel Computer is a trip computer that can display:
- Trip Distance
- Fuel Remaining
- Instant Economy
- Average Economy
- Distance to Empty
Displayed values can be changed from English to metric units by pressing the E/M button on the Switch Module.

The menu for the Fuel Computer is normally blank, except for the function being displayed. When the SELECT button on the Switch Module is pressed, all menu choices will light up. Approximately five seconds after the SELECT button has been released, menu will again go blank except for the new function being displayed.

System Scanner
The System Scanner monitors five systems and warns the driver of these conditions:
- DOOR AJAR
- HEADLAMP OUT
- REAR LAMP OUT
- LOW WASHER FLUID
- LOW OIL LEVEL
Door status, headlamps and rear lamps are monitored continuously. When a fault occurs, a tone will sound for one second and the indicator will flash for five seconds. The indicator will then remain on until the fault is corrected.

Washer fluid level is monitored only when the windshield washers are activated. If fluid level is low, a tone will sound for one second and the indicator will flash for five seconds. The indicator will then remain on until fluid is added to the reservoir and the washers are activated again.

Oil level is checked only while the engine is being started. If oil level is adequate during cranking, the NORMAL indicator will turn on when the key is released to "RUN". The indicator will stay on for approximately five seconds and then go out. If oil level is low during cranking, a tone will sound for one second, and the indicator will flash for five seconds (when the key is released to "RUN"). The indicator will remain on until the engine is turned off and oil is added.

Conventional Indicators
Conventional Indicator bulbs are included in the Digital Instrument Cluster for:
- Turn Signals
- Hi Beam Headlamps
- Oil Pressure
- Brake Pressure/Parking Brake
- Fasten Belts
- CHECK ENGINE
- Air Bag
- ANTI-LOCK BRAKES
Each of these indicators is controlled by switches and modules in its system. The Digital Instrument Cluster serves only as a display area and noise filter. To diagnose faulty operation of these indicators, refer the the appropriate system schematic.
