With Air Conditioning
NOTE: Whenever an evaporator case is removed, it will be necessary to replace the suction accumulator/drier.
Heater And Evaporator Case Removal And Installation:
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Drain the coolant from the radiator into a clean container.
3. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system, please refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair
4. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core. Plug the heater core tubes, or blow any coolant from the heater core with low-pressure air.
5. Disconnect the vacuum supply hose from the in-line vacuum check valve in the engine compartment.
6. Disconnect the liquid line and the accumulator from the evaporator core at the dash panel. Cap the refrigerant lines and the evaporator core to prevent the entrance of dirt and moisture.
7. Remove the instrument panel and place it on front seat, please refer to Body and Frame/Interior Trim/Dash Board/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair
8. Remove the screw holding the instrument panel shake brace to the evaporator case and remove the instrument panel shake brace.
9. Remove the two screws retaining the floor register and the rear seat duct to the bottom of the evaporator case.
10. Remove the three nuts retaining the evaporator case to the dash panel in the engine compartment.
11. Remove the two screws retaining the support brackets to the cowl top panel.
12. Carefully pull the evaporator assembly away from the dash panel and remove the evaporator case from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION
1. Position the evaporator case assembly to the dash panel and the cowl top panel at the air inlet opening. Install the two screws retaining the support brackets to the cowl top panel.
2. Install the three nuts in the engine compartment retaining the evaporator case to the dash panel.
3. Install the floor register and the rear seat duct to the evaporator case and tighten the two retaining screws.
4. Install the instrument panel shake brace and screw it to the evaporator case.
5. Install the instrument panel, please refer to Body and Frame/Interior Trim/Dash Board/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair
6. Connect the liquid line and the suction accumulator to the evaporator core.
CAUTION: Make sure the correct type O-rings are installed on the A/C fittings.
7. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
8. Connect the black vacuum supply hose to the vacuum check valve in the engine compartment.
9. Fill the radiator to the correct level with the removed coolant or the specified mixture of coolant and water.
10. Connect the battery ground cable.
NOTE: On vehicles equipped with Electronic Engine Control (EEC), when the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the EEC processor relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the strategy.
11. Leak test, evacuate, and charge the A/C refrigerant system, please refer to Heating and Air Conditioning/Service and Repair/ Service and Repair
12. Check the system for proper operation.
