TRANSMISSION - AODE - INTERMEDIATE ONE WAY CLUTCH REPEAT REPAIRS DUE TO CONTAMINATION - POLICE/TAXI/FLEET APPLICATIONS
FORD:
1992-94 CROWN VICTORIA
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1992-94 GRAND MARQUIS
This TSB is being republished in its entirety to correct the dimension of the bleed hole in the overdrive servo case bore.
ISSUE:
A "no 1-2 upshift" or "shifts 1-3" concern, a loss of second gear or a vibration or shudder in second gear may be caused by early wear-out of the intermediate one way clutch. Repeat repairs may occur in Police, Fleet and Taxi applications if contamination from the damaged intermediate one way clutch is not removed from the system prior to reassembly.
ACTION:
If service requiring removal of the transmission is required on an AODE-equipped Police Fleet or Taxi vehicle, include the service actions contained in this TSB article to ensure customer satisfaction and avoid repeat repairs. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
Inspect or replace the following components as required:
^ Replace the forward clutch/stator support seal rings with new design seal rings (F4AZ-7D019-A), Figure 1.
^ Inspect the stator support for wear in the ring grooves and in the rear bushing, Figure 1.
^ Inspect mating area of the forward clutch cylinder and input shaft assembly for wear in the cylinder bore, Figure 2.
NOTE:
IF THE STATOR OR FORWARD CLUTCH ASSEMBLY SHOW INDICATIONS OF WEAR, REPLACE THEM AS REQUIRED.
^ Inspect the 0.020" (0.508 mm) bleed hole in the overdrive servo case bore. Ensure that the hole is not blocked by blowing short bursts of air through the hole and using fingers to verify airflow inside the case, Figure 3.
^ Clean and inspect main control assembly, and replace valve body gaskets. Refer to the appropriate model year Town Car/Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Service Manual, Section 07-01, for service details.
^ Remove clean and inspect Electronic Pressure Control solenoid and bracket. Replace as required with new design service part (F3AZ-7G383-A).
^ Clean and inspect shift solenoid assembly. Replace as required with new design service part (F4AZ-7G484-A).
^ Inspect all band and clutch friction material and replace as required.
^ Flush torque converter. Flush transmission cooler and cooler lines in both directions, starting with back-flush.
^ Use transmission tester after reassembly to verify internal electrical connections.
^ Use Rotunda Transmission Tester 007-0085C, or equivalent, to verify Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLP) operation. Refer to TSB 93-19-7 for proper date code. Replace MLP sensor as required.
^ Inspect the external transmission connector and wiring harness connectors for corrosion and replace as required. Repack with proper dielectric grease on all electrical connections during reassembly.
