LAMP - HEADLAMP CONTAINS MOISTURE OR "FOGGING"

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1992-93 GRAND MARQUIS

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may have moisture or fogging" within the headlamp assembly. The headlamp assembly may have been replaced previously for the same concern. This is due to water being drawn into the headlamp air vent by changes in internal air pressure.

ACTION:
Shelter the headlamp air vent from contact with water spilling from above the headlamp assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open the hood and remove the access panel above the headlamp.

2. Locate the high beam headlamp bulb protruding through a clearance hole in the Grille Opening Panel Reinforcement (GOP). The high beam bulb is the inboard bulb, closest to the center of the vehicle. The headlamp vent is located beside the low beam bulb, in the back of the headlamp (Figure 1).

3. Clean the top surface of the grille opening panel reinforcement with a damp cloth (this will allow the adhesive from the silencer strip to adhere).

4. Cut off a 100 mm (3.93") length of adhesively backed 3M Silencer Strip (051135-08585) from the roll of material.

5. Apply the strip to the top side of the grille opening panel so that about one third of the strip is stuck to the GOP. Bend the remaining two thirds of the strip down the back of the headlamp so that the headlamp vent tube is protected from downward flowing water (Figure 1).

6. Replace the headlamp access panel and close the hood.
