Electronic Control Unit (ECU)

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

REFER TO THE 1993 TOWN CAR/CROWN VICTORIA/GRAND MARQUIS SHOP MANUAL, SECTION 6-09, FOR ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES.

1. INSPECTION

(The ECU is located in the engine compartment, on the front side of the radiator support, between the radiator support and the grille. It is located on the right hand side for Town Car, and the left hand side for Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis).

a. Inspect the ECU module's color. If the color is black, no action is required: Release the vehicle.

b. If the ECU module is not black, and the part number label attached to the ECU module is not F3AC-2C219-CA, the module must be replaced. (See "ECU Module Removal" below).

2. ECU MODULE REMOVAL

NOTE:
RECORD RADIO MEMORY SELECTIONS FOR RESETTING AFTER ECU REPLACEMENT

a. Disconnect negative battery cable.

b. Disconnect 55-pin connector from ECU module.
(Unlock connector by pulling up lever completely).

c. Move end of connector away from ECU module until all terminals are clear, then pull connector up out of slots in ECU module.

d. Remove three screws attaching ECU module to mounting bracket and remove ECU module. Return to Warranty Parts Return Center.

3. ECU MODULE INSTALLATION

NOTE:
IF REPLACEMENT ECU MODULE IS TAKEN FROM DEALER STOCK, VERIFY THAT "DEALER STOCK INSPECTION" PROCEDURE SHOWN ON ATTACHMENT II, HAS BEEN COMPLETED. IF THE INSPECTION PROCEDURE HAS NOT BEEN COMPLETED, YOUR PARTS DEPARTMENT MUST VERIFY THAT THE REPLACEMENT ECU MODULE IS GOOD BEFORE CONTINUING WITH THE REPAIR.

a. Align ECU module with bracket so that lever is facing up, and the side with two mounting holes is flat against bracket at top. (For Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis align ECU module with bracket so that locking lever is on the driver's side of the vehicle.

NOTE:
If all three holes in ECU module do not line up with holes in mounting bracket, ECU module is incorrectly aligned with bracket.

b. Install three retaining screws and tighten to 4.5-6.8 N-m (40-60 lb.in).

c. Connect 55-pin connector by installing bottom part of connector into slots in ECU module and pushing top portion of connector into ECU module. Then, pull locking lever completely down to insure proper installation.

d. Connect negative battery cable.

e. Reset radio memory selections.
