Without Programmable Ride Control

PURPOSE
The Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) System controls power assist, which depends upon vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The VAPS Module provides a large amount of assist at low speeds and also increases assist as the steering wheel angle increases, during parking, for example. A smaller amount of assist is provided at high speeds to allow greater road feel.

OPERATION
With the Ignition Switch in "RUN", voltage is applied to the Steering Sensor and to the VAPS Module.

The Power Steering Actuator, which is controlled by the VAPS Module, controls a hydraulic valve, which determines the amount of hydraulic assist available to the driver.
