Passive Restraint System (Motorized Seat Belts)

PASSIVE RESTRAINTS
The Passive Restraint System, which operates electrically, restrains the driver and front seat passenger in the vehicle through the use of the automatic shoulder belt, the manual lap belt and knee bolsters.

THE LAP SAFETY BELT IS TO BE MANUALLY BUCKLED BY THE DRIVER/PASSENGER AND SHOULD ALWAYS BE WORN WITH THE SHOULDER BELT. BE SURE THE LAP BELT IS ON YOUR HIPS AS LOW AS POSSIBLE.

After entering the vehicle and closing the door, check to ensure the shoulder belt is latched to the emergency release buckle at the A-pillar.

If it is not latched, pull the shoulder belt from the retractor between the seat and console, and buckle it to the emergency release buckle. Insert the key into the ignition and turn the key to the ON position. A motor will drive the shoulder belt along its track starting at the front body A-pillar and moving rearward to its locked position in the center body B-pillar.

NOTE: The shoulder belt will not move rearward if door is not fully closed.

If driver's lap belt is fastened when the ignition key is turned to ON, the safety belt indicator lamp in instrument cluster will not illuminate (provided no automatic shoulder belt warning conditions are present).

If driver's lap belt is not fastened when the ignition key is turned to ON, the safety belt warning chime will sound for approximately six seconds and the safety belt warning indicator lamp in instrument cluster will illuminate steadily for approximately 60 seconds as a reminder to fasten the lap belt. If the lap belt is fastened while this indicator lamp is illuminated, the indicator lamp will be extinguished immediately (provided no automatic shoulder belt warning conditions are present).

NOTE: During an automatic shoulder belt warning condition (automatic shoulder belt not connected to its buckle or a shoulder belt stalled before reaching B-pillar locked position), the safety belt indicator lamp in instrument cluster will remain lit continuously.

With ignition key turned to ON position and one or both front seat shoulder belts are not latched in the emergency release buckles, the safety belt warning indicator lamp will come on immediately and stay lit until both shoulder belts are latched in their buckles. If the front seat shoulder belts are still not latched in the emergency release buckles when the shoulder belt buckle reaches the B-pillar locked position, the warning chime will sound for approximately six seconds.

If the indicator lamp and warning chime stay on with both front seat shoulder belts latched in the emergency release buckles, the shoulder belt may not have reached the B-pillar locked position.

After the door is closed and the ignition key is turned to the ON position, the shoulder belt automatically travels from the A-pillar to the B-pillar.

If the shoulder belt should stall before reaching the B-pillar locked position, the safety belt warning indicator lamp will come on (after a delay of eight seconds) and the warning chime will sound (after a delay of approximately 15 seconds) the lamp and chime will stay on until the shoulder belt is locked at the B-pillar.

If both the indicator lamp and chime remain on, check to ensure both shoulder belts are latched to the emergency release buckle. If they are latched, the shoulder belt has not reached its locked position at the B-pillar, perform Manual Override System procedures before driving the vehicle.

The shoulder belt will automatically adjust itself to allow for comfort and freedom of movement by the occupant. It will lock tight only on extremely hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more.

When the ignition is in any position and the door is opened, the shoulder belt will move forward to the A-pillar. This will allow ample room to enter and exit the vehicle.

WARNING: USE THE SHOULDER BELT ON THE OUTSIDE SHOULDER ONLY. NEVER WEAR THE SHOULDER BELT UNDER THE ARM. NEVER SWING IT AROUND YOUR NECK OVER THE INSIDE SHOULDER. NEVER USE A SINGLE BELT FOR MORE THAN ONE PERSON. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE PRECAUTIONS COULD INCREASE THE CHANCE AND/OR SEVERITY OF INJURY IN A COLLISION.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE the belt as an assist handle when entering or exiting the vehicle. The door should not be opened while the vehicle is in motion.

Circuit Protection
The vehicle passive restraint system is protected with a 20 gauge fuse link (DK Blue). The fuse link is located on the RH side of the vehicle near the starter motor relay.
