COOLING SYSTEM - ENGINE MAY OVERHEAT AFTER EXTENDED IDLE IN WARM TEMPERATURES ON VEHICLES WITH A 3.8L ENGINE
FORD:
1993 THUNDERBIRD
LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1993 COUGAR
ISSUE:
Some vehicles may experience engine overheating during extended idle in ambient temperatures above 90~F (32~C). This condition may also occur in stop-and-go city driving. This may be caused by insufficient airflow through the radiator at low engine RPM'S.
ACTION:
Replace the water pump pulley and accessory drive belt with the new smaller diameter pulley and belt to improve cooling fan performance and increase airflow through the radiator. Refer to the following service procedure.
1. Perform normal cooling system checks per 1993 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual, Page 03-03-9.
2. Remove the water pump pulley and accessory drive belt as outlined in the 1993 Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual, Section 03-05.
3. Install a new water pump pulley (F4PZ-8509-A) and accessory drive belt (F3AZ-8620-A).
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal. Clean the area, install the decal, and cover it with a clear plastic decal shield.
