Removal/Installation
Fig. 4 Power Steering Gear Exploded View:
On 1994 models equipped with airbags, disable airbag system prior to performing service operation as possible airbag deployment may cause personal injury.
Refer to Fig. 4 when replacing power steering gear.
1. From inside of the vehicle, remove nuts securing set plate, then remove set plate.
2. Remove intermediate shaft to pinion shaft bolt from inside of vehicle.
3. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.
4. Remove cotter pins and nuts securing tie rod ends to steering knuckles.
5. Separate tie rod end from steering knuckle using a suitable tie rod end separator.
6. Remove two screws from power steering line retaining bracket, then remove bracket from steering gear housing.
7. Disconnect return and the high-pressure line from steering gear and plug lines.
8. On vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle, disconnect extension bar and shift control rod from transaxle.
9. On all vehicles, remove nuts from two steering gear mounting brackets, then remove splash shield from left wheel well.
10. Remove steering gear from left side of vehicle.
11. Reverse procedure to install noting following:
a. Torque steering gear mounting bracket nuts to 27-38 ft. lbs.
b. On vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle, torque extension bar nut to 23-34 ft. lbs. and shift control rod nut to 12-17 ft. lbs.
c. On vehicles equipped with a 1.9L/4-116 engine, install a new strap to hold power steering lines to gear housing.
d. On all vehicles, torque return line and high-pressure line flare nuts to 22-28 ft. lbs.
e. Torque tie rod end nuts to 31-42 ft. lbs.
f. Torque intermediate shaft to pinion shaft bolt to 13-20 ft. lbs.
