Camshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL


1. Remove the intake manifold assembly.
a. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
b. Partially drain the cooling system.
c. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
d. Remove the air intake tube.
e. Disconnect the fuel injector harness from the ECA harness at the right-hand shock tower.
f. Disconnect the crankshaft sensor.
g. Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines.
h. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor.
i. Remove the accelerator cable and kickdown cable (automatic transaxle only) from the throttle lever.
j. Remove the accelerator cable bracket from the intake manifold. Position the cables out of the way.
k. Remove the power brake supply hose.
l. Remove the PCV line.
m. Remove the vacuum line from the bottom of the throttle body.

Intake Manifold Assembly Removal:

n. Remove the seven attaching nuts from the intake manifold studs.

Intake Manifold Assembly Removal:

o. Slide the air intake manifold assembly off the studs and remove it from the cylinder head.
p. Remove the intake manifold gasket and discard it.
2. Remove two sensor attaching screws.

Camshaft Sensor Replacement:

3. Remove sensor from cylinder head.



INSTALLATION


1. Inspect the sensor O-rings for damage and replace as necessary.
2. Lubricate the O-rings with light engine oil and insert the sensor into the cylinder head.
3. Install two sensor attaching screws and tighten them to 15-22 in lb (20-30 Nm).
4. Install the intake manifold assembly.
a. Clean and inspect the mounting faces of both the intake manifold and the cylinder head. Both surfaces must be clean and flat.
b. Clean and oil the manifold studs.
c. Position a new gasket over the studs.
d. Install the intake manifold assembly over the studs.
e. Install the seven attaching nuts and tighten to 12-15 ft lb (16-20 Nm).
f. Install the vacuum line on the bottom of the throttle body.
g. Install the power brake supply hose.
h. Install the PCV line.
i. Install the accelerator cable bracket assembly on the intake manifold.
j. Connect the accelerator cable and kickdown cable (automatic transaxle only) on the throttle lever.
k. Connect the camshaft position sensor electrical connector.
l. Connect the fuel supply and return lines.
m. Connect the two fuel injector harness connectors to the engine control module harness at the right-hand shock tower.
n. Install the air intake tube.
o. Refill the cooling system.
p. Connect the negative battery cable.
q. Start the engine and check for fuel and coolant leaks.
