Oxygen Sensor: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

Heated Oxygen Sensor:





NOTE: The Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen (HEGO) sensor can be reached from under the hood.


1. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.

CAUTION: Excessive force may damage threads in exhaust pipe.

2. Using a box wrench or suitable socket, remove the sensor from the catalytic converter inlet pipe. The oxygen sensor may be difficult to remove when engine temperature is below 120°F.


INSTALLATION

1. If a new sensor is being used, install the new sensor into the catalytic converter inlet pipe.
2. If an old sensor is being reused, coat threads with anti-seize compound, then install the HEGO sensor in the catalytic converter inlet pipe.
3. Tighten the sensor to 30 ft lb (41 Nm).
4. Connect the sensor electrical connector.
