Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.

2. Remove brake drum screws, then the brake drum.

3. Remove wheel hub as described in Transmission and Drivetrain/Axle Shaft and Bearings.

4. Remove brake shoe retracting springs, Fig. 1, using screwdriver to push in and twist spring to disengage it from pin.

5. Remove righthand anti-rattle spring.

6. Push and turn brake shoe hold down springs and remove.

7. Remove primary rear brake shoe and lining from brake backing plate, then the secondary rear brake shoe and lining.


INSTALLATION

1. If rear brake shoes and linings are to be reused, inspect rear brake shoes and linings to ensure they meet specifications.

2. Clean brake backing plate with suitable brake vacuum, then lubricate brake shoe and lining contact points and area where rear brake shoes and linings ride with suitable lubricant.

3. Tighten wheel cylinder bolts to specifications.

4. If new rear brake shoes and linings are being installed, resurface brake drums to remove glazing and ensure an equal friction surface from side to side surface will also correct out-of-round and bell conditions.

5. Position secondary rear brake shoe and lining on brake backing plate. then install one brake shoe hold down spring.

6. Position primary rear brake shoe and lining on brake backing plate, then install other brake shoe hold down spring.


7. Install righthand anti-rattle spring then the upper and lower brake shoe retracting springs.

8. Measure brake drum and rear brake shoes and linings with brake adjustment gauge tool No. D81L-1103-A or equivalent, Fig. 2.

9. Insert screwdriver into knurled quadrant of rear quad operating lever stopper, Fig. 1, then adjust rear brake shoes and linings to same measurement of brake drum.

10. Install wheel hub as described in Transmission and Drivetrain/Axle Shaft and Bearings.

11. Install brake drum, then the brake drum screws. Tighten brake drum screws to specifications.

12. Install wheel and tire assembly.
