Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
The electric cooling fan system consists of a two speed fan on all 3.0L and 3.8L engines with automatic transaxles or a single speed fan on 3.0L SHO engines with a manual transaxle and 2.3L engines. The electric cooling fan motor is mounted within a shroud behind the radiator assembly. The Integrated Relay Control Module (IRCM) actuates the fan motor when the engine coolant reaches a specified temperature, when the engine reaches a specified speed, or when the air conditioning clutch is activated, if equipped. The Integrated Relay Control Module (IRCM) interfaces with the EEC-IV system to provide control for the cooling fan, air conditioning clutch and the fuel pump. The IRCM also contains the EEC power relay which provides vehicle battery power (VPWR) to the EEC-IV processor.
