DATE: 06-03-92

^ ACCELERATOR PEDAL HARD TO DEPRESS DURING COLD WEATHER-4.6L AND 5.OL ENGINES WITH AOD TRANSMISSION

^ TRANSMISSION-AOD-THROTTLE VALVE CABLE STICKS DURING COLD WEATHER

FORD: 1992 CROWN VICTORIA, MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1992 GRAND MARQUIS, MARK VII, TOWN CAR

ISSUE:
The accelerator pedal may be hard to depress during cold weather. It may require some force to move the first time it is depressed or it may feel extremely rough or scrubby the first time it is depressed. This condition results from moisture entering the AOD transmission TV (throttle valve) cable and freezing or causing mineral/salt deposits to build up on the cable.

ACTION:
Check the TV cable for moisture or mineral/salt buildup. If necessary, install a new moisture resistant TV cable. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Raise the vehicle and pull back the black rubber boot on the TV cable at the transmission attachment. If moisture is present, replace the TV cable. Refer to the appropriate .1992 Service Manual, Sections 07-01 or 07-01B, for service details. Refer to the following TV Cable Application Chart for correct parts usage.

2. If no moisture is noted, slide the compression spring and black spring guide toward the transmission attachment.

a. Examine the TV cable lay wires under the spring guide for signs of white corrosion buildup.

b. Replace the TV cable if corrosion is present. Refer to the appropriate 1992 Service Manual, Sections 07-01 or 07-01B, for service details. Refer to the following TV Cable Application Chart for correct parts usage.

3. If no corrosion is detected, disconnect the TV cable from the transmission, lower vehicle and cycle the throttle.

^ If the operation feels smooth, the TV cable is OK.

^ If the throttle feels sticky, scrubby or binds, disconnect the TV cable from the throttle lever. Cycle the throttle and note operation.

a. If the operation is smooth, replace the TV cable. Refer to the appropriate 1992 Service Manual, Sections 07-01 or 07-01B, for service details. Refer to the following TV Cable Application Chart for correct parts usage.

b. If the operation is still scrubby or binds, the condition is not due to the TV cable and other accelerator pedal linkage or related components must be checked.
