RADIO - ALTERNATOR "WHINE" HEARD DURING AM/FM/TAPE MODE - VEHICLES WITH PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM BUILT BEFORE 5/1/91

ISSUE:
An alternator "whine" noise may be heard during the AM/FM/Tape playing mode. This condition is most noticeable in the cassette tape mode. It occurs because audio noise suppression components were not incorporated in the Premium Sound System.
ACTION:
Determine if the alternator "whine" condition exists and, if necessary, install an Audio Service Kit. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
Audio Service Kit -18887- contains the following components.
^ One (1) purple/light blue jumper wire assembly
^ One (1) red jumper wire assembly
^ One (1) connector
^ One (1) spacer
^ One (1) instruction sheet
1. Turn the radio ON with the engine running.
2. Insert a blank cassette tape in the tape player.
3. Listen for alternator "whine" through the speakers.
NOTE:
THE PITCH OF THE "WHINE" WILL VARY WITH ENGINE RPM.
4. Verify the condition.
a. Turn the engine OFF.
b. Turn the key ON.
c. Listen to tape. The alternator "whine" should be gone.
5. If the alternator "whine" is confirmed, install an Audio Service Kit (-18887-). Refer to the Instruction Sheet included in the kit for installation details.
