AIR CONDITIONING - ATC - BLAST OF COLD AIR

FOLLOWED BY HOT AIR


FORD: 1992 CROWN VICTORIA

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1992 GRAND MARQUIS


ISSUE: The Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) may blast 10 to 15 seconds of cold air followed by 10 to 15 seconds of hot air after engine ignition. This is caused by incorrect wiring of pin 10 on the 14401 wire assembly connection to the ATC blower motor switch on the control assembly.

ACTION: Modity the wiring of pin 10 on the connector and install a new wire assembly A/C jumper (F2AZ-19D887-A). Refer to the following procedure for service details.

Figure 1:

1. Disconnect the battery.

2. Remove the ATC control assembly as shown on pages 12-03-4 and 12-03-5 of the 1992 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Shop Manual.

3. Locate the blower motor switch connector and cigar lighter battery feed wire (16 gauge, lt. blue/white), Figure 1.

4. Remove circuit 296 (20 gauge, white/purple) wire from pin 10 on the connector, Figure 2. Tape over terminal and tape back wire lead to main harness to prevent rattles.


CAUTION: TERMINAL MUST BE COMPLETELY COVERED WITH ELECTRICAL TAPE TO PREVENT A POSSIBLE ELECTRICAL SHORT CONDITION.

5. Insert terminal (supplied terminal jumper assembly) into cavity 10 on the connector.

6. Route the jumper wire to the cigar lighter battery feed wire. Tape the jumper to the main harness where possible.

7. Crimp the cigar lighter battery feed wire to the wire lead using a tap connector (Scotchlock or other brand for use with 14-18 gauge wire, Figure 3).

8. Reconnect blower motor switch connector to ATC control assembly.

9. Connect battery and check for proper operation of the ATC control assembly and cigar lighter.


10. Install ATC control assembly as shown on page 12-03-5 of the 1992 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Shop Manual.
