ISSUE:
The AODE Transmission may exhibit the following concerns:
^ 4-3 Coast Tip-in Bump - This concern occurs during 4-3 coasting down shifts. When the accelerator pedal is depressed, while coasting in 4th gear, a drive line "bump" or "jerk" may be felt.
^ Occasional Firm 3-4 Shift - This condition is caused by the torque converter clutch engaging prior to the 3-4 shift being completed.
^ Extended Shift - This occurs during acceleration when the accelerator is suddenly released. Normal torque converter clutch disengagement may be observed as an increase in engine speed.
^ Transmission "Drumming" or "Groaning" Noise - This condition occurs on vehicles equipped with 2.73 axles when the vehicle is in overdrive and operating in 4th gear between 34-42 MPH (55-68 KmH).
The above concerns may be caused by the operating strategy of the powertrain control module.
ACTION:
Replace the existing powertrain control module with a a new module which has a revised shift and converter clutch operating strategy. Refer to the 1992 Lincoln Town Car, Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Service Manual, Section 07-01A, for service details.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications Decal and list the date, dealer number, and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to the Vehicle Emission Control Information Decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications Decal.
