Exhaust Manifold: Service and Repair
Exhaust Manifold Tightening Sequence:
1. Disconnect battery ground cables.
2. Remove air intake tube and drain cooling system.
3. Remove cooling fan and shroud, then relieve fuel system pressure as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
4. Disconnect fuel lines and remove upper radiator hose.
5. Remove wiper module and support bracket.
6. Discharge A/C system, then disconnect A/C compressor outlet hose at compressor and remove bolt retaining hose assembly to RH coil bracket.
7. Remove 42-pin engine electrical connector from bracket on brake booster.
8. Disconnect 42-pin electrical connector and transmission harness connector.
9. Disconnect throttle valve cable from throttle body, then disconnect heater outlet hose.
10. Remove ground strap at RH cylinder head and position heater hose aside.
11. Remove blower motor resistor.
12. Remove bolt remaining RH engine mount to lower engine bracket.
13. Disconnect both heated exhaust gas oxygen (HEGO) sensors. Raise and support vehicle.
14. Remove engine mount through bolts.
15. Remove EGR tube line nut from RH exhaust manifold.
16. Disconnect exhaust from manifolds. Lower exhaust and support with wire from crossmember.
17. For LH exhaust manifold, remove engine mount from cylinder block and eight bolts retaining exhaust manifold.
18. Position a jack and a block of wood below oil pan, rearward of oil drain hole.
19. Raise engine approximately four inches.
20. For RH exhaust manifold, remove eight mounting bolts and remove manifold.
21. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Position manifold to cylinder head and torque to 15-22 ft. lbs., in sequence shown in Fig. 6.
b. Tighten to specifications.
