Timing Chain Guide: Service and Repair

Removal

NOTE: Because this is not a free wheeling engine, if it has "jumped time," there will be damage to the valves and/or pistons and will require the removal of the cylinder heads.

CAUTION: At NO TIME, when the timing chain(s) are removed and the cylinder heads are installed, may the crankshaft and/or camshaft(s) be ROTATED. Failure to follow these directions will result in valve and/or piston damage.

1. Remove all necessary components to access the timing chains.
2. Remove crankshaft position sensor tooth wheel.

3. ROTATE engine to No. 1 Top Dead Center (TDC).

4. Install Camshaft Positioning Tools or equivalent on flats of camshafts as shown.

NOTE: This will prevent accidental rotation of the camshafts.

5. Remove two bolts retaining Right Hand tensioner to cylinder head and remove tensioner.
6. Remove Right Hand tensioner arm.
7. Remove two bolts retaining Right Hand chain guide to cylinder head and remove chain guide.
8. Remove Right Hand chain from camshaft and crankshaft gears.
9. Remove Right Hand crankshaft gear.
10. If necessary, remove Right Hand camshaft sprocket retaining bolt, washer, gear, and spacer.

NOTE: Camshaft Positioning Tools or equivalent must be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating.

11. Remove two bolts retaining Left Hand tensioner to cylinder head and remove tensioner.
12. Remove Left Hand tensioner arm.
13. Remove two bolts retaining Left Hand chain guide to cylinder head and remove chain guide.
14. Remove Left Hand chain from camshaft and crankshaft gears.
15. Remove Left Hand crankshaft gear.
16. If necessary, remove Left Hand camshaft sprocket retaining bolt, washer, gear, and spacer.

NOTE: Camshaft Positioning Tools or equivalent must be installed on camshaft to prevent camshaft from rotating.

CAUTION: DO NOT ROTATE crankshaft and/or camshaft(s).

NOTE: Inspect friction material on tensioner arms and chain guides. If worn or damaged remove and clean oil pan and replace oil pickup tube.

Installation

NOTE: If engine has "jumped time," ensure that all repairs to engine components and/or valve train have been made. Then ROTATE engine COUNTERCLOCKWISE 45 degrees. This will position all pistons BELOW top of deck face. Install cylinder heads and begin with Step 5.

1. If removed, position Left Hand camshaft spacers and gears on camshaft.
2. Install washer and camshaft gear retaining bolt. Tighten to 110-130 Nm (81-95 ft-lbs).
3. If removed, position Right Hand camshaft spacer and gear on camshaft.
4. Install washer and camshaft gear retaining bolt. Tighten to 11O-13O Nm (81-95 ft-lbs).

NOTE: Cam Positioning Tools or equivalent must be installed on camshaft(s) to prevent camshaft(s) from rotating.

Fig. 26 Crankshaft Sprocket Position:

NOTE: Crankshaft gears are identical. They may only be installed one way. Refer to the illustration for proper gear installation.

5. Install Left Hand crankshaft gear.

NOTE: Ensure tapered part of gear faces AWAY from engine block.

Timing Chain Marks:

NOTE: If copper links of timing chain are not visible, split both chains in half and mark the two opposing links as shown.

6. Install Left Hand timing chain on camshaft gear. Ensure copper link of chain lines up with timing mark of camshaft gear.
7. Install Left Hand timing chain on crankshaft gear. Ensure copper link of chain lines up with timing mark of crankshaft gear.
8. Install Right Hand crankshaft gear.

NOTE: Ensure tapered part of gear faces TOWARD engine block.

9. Install Right Hand timing chain on camshaft gear. Ensure copper link of chain lines up with timing mark of camshaft gear.
10. Install Right Hand timing chain on crankshaft gear. Ensure copper link of chain lines up with timing mark of crankshaft gear.

11. Lubricate tensioner arm contact surfaces with engine oil and install Right Hand and Left Hand tensioner arms on their dowels.
12. Install Right Hand and Left Hand timing chain tensioners and secure with two bolts on each. Tighten bolts to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft-lbs).

NOTE: Do not remove lock pins until timing chain guides are installed.

13. Install Right Hand and Left Hand chain guides and secure with two bolts on each. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (6.0-8.8 ft-lbs).
14. Remove lock pins from timing chain tensioners and ensure all timing marks are aligned.
15. Remove Camshaft Positioning Tools or equivalent.
16. Install all components that were removed to access timing chains.
17. Start engine and check for leaks and proper operation.
