Displaying & Reading Trouble Codes

ACCESSING TROUBLE CODES

Access trouble codes by turning ignition switch to On position and observing the airbag indicator lamp. Certain trouble codes may not be displayed until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition switch is moved to the On position. This is the amount of time required for the diagnostic monitor to test and verify any and all system malfunctions.

READING TROUBLE CODES

The airbag monitor assembly has a coded flashing indicator lamp feature which assists in isolating a system malfunction or defect. The coding is accomplished by a series of airbag indicator lamp flashes. Trouble codes are represented by a series of flashes. Each flash is on for approximately 1/2 second and off for approximately 1/2 second. The number of flashes in each series is based on the type of malfunction being detected. The code is repeated when the ignition switch is in the Run position and a malfunction exists. The trouble code feature is prioritized so that if two or more different malfunctions occur, the highest priority trouble code will be displayed until corrected. If a system malfunction exists and the lamp is inoperative, an audible tone will be heard indicating the need for service. The tone produced is a series of five sets of five beeps. The number of beeps does not indicate the trouble code; it signals the lamp is out and a trouble code is present.

TROUBLE CODE DIAGNOSIS

The most probable malfunctions and associated trouble codes are listed in the trouble code priority charts ranked from top to bottom in priority. Diagnostic Trouble Code Priority Index These listings are for information only and should not be used for system diagnosis or troubleshooting. The airbag system wiring circuits and the diagnostic charts should be used to pinpoint the specific defect and to safely diagnose and repair the system. Pinpoint Tests

VERIFY SYSTEM

``Verify Airbag Lamp'' or ``Verify System'' means to turn the ignition switch to Run and count the number of flashes only after the trouble code has cycled twice. If the airbag lamp comes on continuously for 4 to 8 seconds and then goes out, the system is functioning properly and all defects have been repaired.

CLEARING TROUBLE CODES

Trouble codes may only be cleared from diagnostic memory by repairing the malfunction which led to the trouble code being stored.
