Ignition Control Module: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect vacuum hose from vacuum control unit. Note location of each hose for proper installation.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors.

Distributor Disassembly:






4. Disconnect coil wire from distributor cap.
5. Remove two retaining screws from distributor cap, and position out of the way.
6. Scribe distributor housing and cylinder head so that distributor may be installed in its original position. Note position of rotor.
7. Remove distributor rotor.
8. Remove two distributor hold-down bolts and remove distributor.

NOTE: Do not crank engine after distributor has been removed.

9. Remove dust cover.
10. Remove screw retaining signal rotor and remove signal rotor.
11. Disconnect connector on pick-up assembly.
12. Remove two screws retaining pick-up coil and remove pick-up coil assembly.
13. Remove two screws retaining mounting plate remove mounting plate.
14. Remove snap ring retaining armature and pin.

Armature, Turbo:






15. Pull armature and pin from upper shaft using 2 jaw puller.
16. Disconnect connectors on ignitor module and remove two retaining screws.
17. Remove ignitor module.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply an even thin film of Silicone Dielectric Compound to ignitor module mounting face.
2. Position module and install two retaining screws.
3. Connect wiring connectors.

Armature Installation:






4. Using a socket and the palm of your hand, press armature and pin onto upper shaft until it bottoms against shoulder of upper shaft.
5. Install snap ring retaining armature and pin.
6. Install mounting plate with two retaining screws.
7. Install pick-up coil assembly with two retaining screws.
8. Connect wiring connector on pick-up assembly.
9. Position signal rotor onto upper shaft and secure with retaining screw.
10. Install dust cover.
11. Set rotor to position noted during removal. Lubricate O-ring seal with engine oil.

NOTE: If crankshaft is turned while distributor is removed, rotor position noted during removal can no longer be used to correctly time distributor to camshaft. Distributor drive tang is off-set so as to allow only one installation position. Insert distributor and rotate rotor until drive tang falls into slot of camshaft.

12. Install distributor on rear of cylinder head and align scribe marks.
13. Install two distributor hold-down bolts.
14. Install distributor cap and tighten two retaining screws.
15. Connect coil wire to distributor cap.
16. Connect electrical connectors.
17. Connect vacuum hoses to vacuum control unit.
18. Connect negative battery cable.
19. Start engine, check and adjust ignition timing as necessary.
