Disassembly

1. Before disassembling the differential, measure and record the backlash of the pinion gears as follows:
a. Install both driveshaft on differential assembly.
b. Support driveshafts on V-blocks, then measure backlash of both pinion gears. Correct measurement is 0.000-0.004 inch.
2. Remove eight bolts which secure ring gear to gear case. Tap ring gear around its circumference with a soft mallet to loosen. Remove ring gear from gear case.
3. Mount gear case in a vise equipped with soft jaws. Do not exert excess pressure on vise.
4. Remove pinion shaft roll pin using a 4mm diameter rod at least 3 inches long, and a hammer. Drive roll pin free on gear case.
5. Press front differential bearing from gear case using bearing puller attachment tool No. D84L-1123-A and step plate adapter tool No. D80L-630-3 or equivalents.
6. Remove rear differential bearing from gear case using puller tool No. T77F-4220-B and step plate adapter toll No. D80L-630-3 or equivalents.

Pinion Gear & Thrust Washer Removal:





7. Slide pinion shaft out of gear case. Remove pinion gears and thrust washers by rotating them out of gear case.
8. Pinion and side gear thrust washers should be kept with their respective gears for possible reinstallation.
9. Remove side gears and thrust washers from gear case.
10. Remove speedometer drive gear from gear case.
