ISSUE: A harsh 1-2 and/or 3-4 upshift may be caused by a weak servo return spring.

ACTION: Install a new stronger servo return spring. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Disconnect the Air Change Temperature (ACT) sensor and the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.

3. Remove the air cleaner box. Do not remove the air inlet tube from the MAF.

4. Disconnect the ventilation hose from the bottom of the air cleaner box. Position the box and hose out of the way.

5. Remove the screws from the copper colored wiring harness bracket on top of the transaxle. Position the bracket out of the way and clean the servo area thoroughly.

6. If possible, position the space in the servo snap ring upward.

7. Use large channel-lock pliers to compress the servo cover. Place the jaws of the pliers on the "button" of the cover, and the case boss behind the servo.
8. Remove the servo snap ring.

9. Remove the servo and servo cover.

NOTE: ABOUT TWO (2) OUNCES OF TRANSMISSION FLUID WILL BE LOST.

10. Throw away the old servo spring (yellow dot).

INSTALLATION

1. Wipe the servo bore and servo sealing surfaces with a clean shop cloth.

2. Lubricate "O" ring seals and servo bore with clean transmission fluid.

3. Install the new servo spring on the servo (no color).

4. Install the new spring, servo and cover in the transaxle.

5. Use large channel-lock pliers to compress the servo cover.

6. Install the snap ring.

7. Loosely position the air cleaner in place. Connect the ACT, MAF and battery.
8. Start the car.

9. Shift the transmission through each gear.

10. Check for leaks.

11. Reposition the wiring harness bracket.

12. Tighten the wiring harness bracket, air cleaner box and battery cable.
