Camshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair
REMOVALRear Seat Retaining Clip:
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure as follows:
a. START the engine.
b. Remove the rear seat cushion by depressing the two clips securing the front of the rear seat cushion. They are located about 33 cm from each side of the car. Then remove the seat from the vehicle.
c. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connector.
d. Wait for the engine to stall, then turn OFF the ignition and connect the fuel pump connector.
e. Place the seat in the vehicle and position the safety belts.
f. Align the seat cushion retaining pins to the clips and secure the cushion to the clips.
2. Partially drain the cooling system.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the intake air plenum.
4. Disconnect the fuel injector harness from the Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) harness at the right shock tower.
5. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor.
6. Disconnect the fuel supply and return lines.
7. Disconnect the camshaft position sensor.
8. Remove all cables from the throttle lever.
9. Remove the accelerator cable bracket from the intake manifold and position the cables out of the way.
10. Remove the power brake supply and PCV lines.
11. Remove the vacuum line from the bottom of the throttle body.
Intake Manifold Assembly Removal:
12. Remove the seven attaching nuts from the intake manifold studs.
Intake Manifold Assembly Removal:
13. Slide the intake manifold assembly off of the studs and remove it from the cylinder head.
14. Remove the gasket and discard.
Camshaft Sensor Replacement:
15. Remove the camshaft sensor attaching screws.
16. Remove the sensor from the cylinder head.
INSTALLATION
1. Inspect the camshaft sensor "O"-rings for damage and replace as necessary.
2. Lubricate the "O"-rings with light engine oil and insert the sensor into the cylinder head.
3. Install the retaining screws and torque them to 15-22 lbs. ft. (20-30 N-m).
4. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the manifold and cylinder head. Both surfaces must be clean and flat.
5. Clean and oil the intake manifold studs.
6. Place a new gasket over the studs.
Intake Manifold Replacement:
7. Install the intake manifold over the studs.
8. Install the attaching nuts and torque them to 12-15 lbs. ft. (16-20 N-m).
9. Install the vacuum line to the bottom to the throttle body.
10. Install the power brake supply and PCV line.
11. Install the accelerator cable bracket assembly on the intake manifold.
12. Connect the cables to the throttle lever.
13. Connect the camshaft position sensor electrical connector.
14. Connect the fuel supply and return lines and retaining clips.
15. Connect the fuel injector harness connectors to the EEC-IV harness at the right shock tower.
16. Refill the cooling system and connect the negative battery cable.
17. START the engine and check for fuel and coolant leaks.
