Instrument Panel - Loud Ticking Noise

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 TRACER


ISSUE: A loud "ticking" noise may be heard coming from the top of the instrument panel on the RH side of the car. The noise is caused by the windshield glass rubbing on the RH lower glass stop.

ACTION: Remove and throw away the slider block portion of the stop assembly as shown in Figure 1. Refer to the following procedure for service details.


1. Stop the windshield wipers in the vertical position.

2. Remove the lower windshield garnish. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Shop Manual, Section 01-08, for service details.

3. Using a screwdriver, remove and throw away the square white center piece of the RH glass stop as shown in Figure 1.

4. Insert a 2 mm diameter rod, or equivalent tool, into the spring hole in the stop.
a. Pry upward to release the spring, Figure 1.

b. At the same time, push the slider block downward toward the bottom of the spacer.

c. Remove and throw away the slider block portion of the stop assembly.

5. Replace the lower windshield garnish. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Shop Manual, Section 01-08, for service details.
