Steering: Description and Operation
RACK & PINION GEARThe power steering system consists of a rack and pinion steering gear, a power steering pump, a fluid reservoir and interconnecting hydraulic lines. The power steering system uses hydraulic pressure generated by the power steering pump to reduce the effort required to turn the steering wheel.
The rack and pinion gear is held in place by two mounting brackets and moulded rubber grommets. The gear is a hydraulic mechanical unit that uses and integral piston and rack design to provide power assisted steering control.
On models equipped with 1.9L engine, the middle bearing is not serviceable and should not be removed from the steering gear housing. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace short rack assembly.
