LOCKS - POWER DOOR - CONTROLLER STICKS IN UP OR DOWN POSITION - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 12/1/90

FORD:
1991 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY:
1991 TRACER

ISSUE:
The power door lock controller may stick in the up or down position. This occurs because of the internal components in the original door lock controllers.

ACTION:
Check the operation of the power door lock controller. If it sticks, replace it with an improved door lock controller. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Confirm that the door lock controller is sticking.

2. Remove the sticking door lock controller. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Service Manual, Section 01-14, for the removal procedure.

3. Check the build date code on the controller, Figure 1.

4. Check the internal door linkages. Make sure they are not binding and are properly lubricated.

5. If the power door lock is still sticking and the controller was built within the specified build dates, replace the door controller.

NOTE:
USE CONTROLLERS MARKED "11KI" OR LATER. CHECK THE PARTS STOCK TO MAKE SURE THAT EARLIER BUILT CONTROLLERS ARE NOT INSTALLED.
