Idle Speed: Adjustments

Before adjusting the idle speed, make sure: Ignition timing is correct, all electrical accessories are OFF while making actual adjustments.

1. Apply the parking brake and make sure that the vehicle is in PARK (A/T), or NEUTRAL (M/T).
2. START and idle the engine until operating temperatures have been reached.
3. Turn OFF the engine. Disable the radiator cooling fan.
4. Using a jumper wire, connect the GROUND terminal to the number TEN terminal on the diagnosis connector.

5. Using a tachometer, connect the positive lead to the IG terminal on the diagnosis connector, and the negative lead to the negative battery post.

6. Using the tachometer, verify the idle speed is within:

Manual Transaxle 750 +/- 50 RPM

Automatic Transaxle 750 +/- 50 RPM

Canadian Models 800 +/- 50 RPM

NOTE: When the parking brake is not applied, the idle speed for automatic transaxles will be slightly higher.

7. If the idle speed is not within specification, adjust the idle speed by turning the idle speed adjusting screw until the idle speed is within the range indicated.

8. After adjustments are complete, remove the jumper wire and the tachometer. Reconnect cooling fan.
