SAFETY RECALL 92S54FUEL PUMP INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Remove the rear seat cushion and fuel pump access cover as outlined in Section 10-01 of the Escort/Tracer Service Manual.
2. Inspect the fuel pump and bracket assembly to determine the manufacturer (Figures 1 and 2).
3. If the assembly has a Handy and Harman logo stamped on the flange, no further action is required. Reinstall the access cover and the rear seat cushion.
NOTE:
The Handy and Harman pump can be identified by the "HH" symbol stamped on the flange between the supply and return tubes (Figure 1).
4. If the assembly does NOT have an "H&H" logo stamped on the flange, check the assembly build date (Figure 2). If the date code indicates a build date of 9/1/91 (910901, Year, Month and Day) or later, no further action is required. Reinstall the access cover and the rear seat cushion.
5. If the assembly has a build date before 9/1/91 (910901), or if the build date cannot be determined, drain the fuel from the fuel tank and remove the pump assembly from the fuel tank as outlined in Section 10-01 of the Escort/Tracer Service Manual. Transfer the sending unit to the new pump and bracket assembly. Install the new assembly in the fuel tank using a new gasket. Connect the fuel lines to the pump and install the hairpin clips.
6. Destroy and dispose of the old pump and bracket assembly.
7. Temporarily connect the ground strap with a retaining screw to one of the four access cover screw holes in the floor pan.
8. Turn the ignition switch to RUN position several times to pressurize the system and check for obvious leaks. Correct as required.
9. Remove the ground strap and retaining screw installed in Step 7.
10. Reinstall the fuel pump access cover and rear seat cushion as outlined in Section 10-01 of the Escort/Tracer Service Manual.
