SPEEDOMETER CABLE SPEED SENSOR
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
REFER TO THE 1991 ESCORT/TRACER SHOP MANUAL, SECTION 13-02, FOR THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE, SPEED SENSOR AND SPEEDOMETER HEAD REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES.
1. Disconnect speedometer cable from the speed sensor at the transmission by pulling up on the cable.
2. Inspect the speedometer cable and speed sensor bore for transmission fluid. Also, check the speed sensor bore for the presence of a rubber ball seal by inserting a 1.25 mm (3/64 inch) drill bit into the bore and tapping against the bottom.
3. If no transmission fluid is found and there is a soft rubbery feel and no metallic sound is heard as the drill bit is tapped against the bottom, the speed sensor is good. No further action is required. Release the car.
4. If transmission fluid is found in the speedometer cable or speed sensor bore, regardless of feel and sound, disconnect the speedometer cable from the speedometer head. Inspect for transmission fluid or excessive speedometer cable grease at the back of the speedometer head or inside the speedometer cable ferrule.
^ If transmission fluid or excessive speedometer cable grease is not present, replace the speedometer cable and speed sensor.
^ If transmission fluid or excessive speedometer cable grease is present, replace the speedometer head, speedometer cable and speed sensor.
5. Clean all areas affected by the leak.
NOTE:
If the speedometer head is replaced, be sure to reset the odometer mileage. Federal law requires that the odometer in any replacement speedometer must register the same mileage as that of the removed speedometer.
