HORN - INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE HORN BLOW - VEHICLES WITH NON-SPEED CONTROL BUILT BEFORE 8/1/90

FORD: 1991 ESCORT

LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 TRACER

ISSUE: The horn may blow intermittently or not operate when the horn switch is pressed. This occurs because the horn brush does not fully contact the slip ring on the two and four spoke steering wheel assemblies.

ACTION: Install a service washer assembly (N807084-S) on the backside of the steering wheel to move the slip ring closer to the brush assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

REMOVAL

TWO SPOKE STEERING WHEEL

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Remove two (2) screws from the backside of the steering wheel that retain the horn pad cover to the wheel.

3. Remove the horn pad cover by lifting at the bottom and pushing the horn pad cover upward to disengage the pad cover hook from the latch on the steering wheel.

FOUR SPOKE STEERING WHEEL

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Remove four (4) screws from the backside of the steering wheel.

3. Lift the horn pad cover and disconnect the horn wire from the terminal.

4. Remove the horn pad cover.

5. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut.

6. Using a steering wheel puller tool (T67L-3600-A) or equivalent, remove the steering wheel from the column shaft. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Shop Manual, Section 11-04, for removal procedure details.

CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE STEERING WHEEL BY HITTING THE COLUMN SHAFT WITH A HAMMER BECAUSE IT MAY COLLAPSE THE COLUMN.

Figure 1:

INSTALLATION

1. Place the service washer assembly (N807084-S) on the backside of the steering wheel.

2. Align the washer between the metal spokes as shown in Figure 1. (Installing this washer moves the slip ring closer to the brush assembly.)

3. Install the back cover to the steering wheel.

NOTE: ON THE FOUR SPOKE STEERING WHEEL, BE SURE THAT THE TWO (2) COLORED RETAINERS ARE POSITIONED ON THE STEERING WHEEL PROPERLY TO KEEP THEM IN PLACE.

4. Install the two (2) lower screws part way. These retainers are required to secure the lower part of the horn pad cover in place.

5. Position the steering wheel assembly to the column shaft.

6. Install the retaining nut. Tighten it to 29-36 lb.ft. (39-49 N-m).

TWO SPOKE WHEEL

1. Connect the horn wire to the terminal on the horn pad cover.

2. Place the tab on the underside of the pad cover into the slot at the top of the steering wheel.

3. Pull the pad cover downward slightly until the tab in the pad cover is locked in place.

4. Install two (2) screws from the backside of the steering wheel to secure the pad cover in place.

FOUR SPOKE WHEEL

1. Connect the horn wire to the terminal on the horn pad cover.

2. Place the pad cover on the steering wheel.

3. Install four (4) screws from the backside of the steering wheel.

4. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
