RADIO - DOOR SPEAKERS - AUDIO DISTORTION DUE TO WATER ENTRY - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 3/1/91
FORD: 1991 ESCORT
LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1991 TRACER
ISSUE: A "buzz" or distorted sound may come from the door speakers. This is caused by warpage of the speaker cone due to exposure to water. Sometimes, pooling of water has been found in a cup formed by the bottom of the speaker frame and speaker cone.
^ In August, 1990, a drain hole was added to the speaker frame.
^ In February, 1991, a drain notch was added to the bottom of the radio speaker opening in the door inner sheet metal panel.
ACTION: If service is required, whether the speakers are or are not replaced, add a drain notch to the door inner sheet metal to prevent a return of water entry. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Remove the door trim panel. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Shop Manual, Section 01-05, for removal procedure.
2. Remove the radio door speaker. Refer to the 1991 Escort/Tracer Shop Manual, Section 15-03, for removal procedure.

3. Make a 3/16" x 5/8" (5 mm x 16 mm) notch at the 6 o'clock location of the speaker opening in the door inner panel. Remove the metal with a hand grinder or file as shown in Figure 1.
4. Reinstall the radio door speaker.
5. Reinstall the door trim panel.
