Throttle Cable/Linkage: Service and Repair
ACCELERATOR CABLE REMOVAL:
1. Remove the snow shield from the accelerator cable.
2. Remove the air intake duct assembly.
3. Remove the cable snap-in nylon bushing from the pedal arm.
4. Remove the cable housing from the dash panel by depressing the two vertical snap-in tabs and pushing outward from inside the passenger compartment.
5. Remove the speed control cable from the accelerator cable.
6. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body lever by inserting a screw driver between the cable and the throttle lever and twisting.
7. Remove the cable housing to engine mounting bracket retaining screw and remove the cable from the bracket slot.
INSTALLATION:
1. Insert the pedal end of the accelerator cable, with the cover in place, through the dash panel and snap the cable housing into the dash panel. Make sure the cable housing retention snaps have engaged into the dash panel.
2. Position the cable housing into the engine mounting bracket, and install and tighten.
3. Connect the cable to the throttle body lever.
4. Install the speed control cable, if equipped.
5. Remove the cable protective cover and snap the cable nylon bushing into the pedal arm.
6. Make sure that the body insulation is properly positioned and not in contact with moving parts of the accelerator cable.
7. Install the air duct assembly.
8. Install the snow shield.
ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARM ASSEMBLY
REMOVAL:
1. Using a suitable tool, remove the cable snap-in nylon bushing from the pedal arm.
2. Remove the pedal arm assembly retaining bolt.
3. Remove the pedal arm assembly.
INSTALLATION:
1. Install the pedal arm assembly into the dash weld-on bracket and install the the pivot/retaining bolt, and tighten to 8.0-12.0 Nm (6.0-9.0 lb.ft).
2. Make sure the carpeting and insulation are properly positioned.
3. Snap the accelerator cable nylon bushing into the pedal arm.
4. Check the pedal assembly for smooth operation.
TRANSMISSION (TV) CONTROL LINKAGE, EXTERNAL
TRANSAXLE, AUTOMATIC (ATX)
REMOVAL:
1. Remove the snow shield from the accelerator cable bracket by removing the retaining bolt and nut.
2. Remove the TV linkage return spring from the TV bracket and control rod assembly.
3. Remove the TV control rod assembly from the throttle lever by inserting a screwdriver and using a slight twist.
4. Remove the TV rod from the control lever on the transaxle by inserting a screwdriver between the rod and lever and giving a twist.
5. Remove the TV bracket assembly from the intake manifold by removing the bolts.
INSTALLATION:
1. Position the TV bracket assembly on the intake manifold and tighten the bolts to 14.0-20.0 Nm (10.0-15.0 lb.ft).
2. Loosen the bolt on the TV control rod trunnion block a minimum of one turn. If a new TV control rod is to be installed, continue on to step 3. Remove the dirt and corrosion from the control rod so that the insert slides freely on the rod, if installing the existing control rod.
3. Install the TV control rod insulator onto the transaxle control lever pin. Support the back side of the lever while pushing the insulator over the pin.
4. Install the TV control rod clip onto the throttle lever ball stud.
5. Install the TV linkage return spring between the TV bracket and the rod assembly.
6. Adjust the TV linkage.
7. Actuate the linkage to wide-open position to ensure free travel.
8. Position the snow shield on the accelerator cable bracket and tighten the bolt and nut to 5.4-9.4 Nm (4.0-7.0 lb.ft).
